Reader's and Writer's Workshop
In Reading Workshop, we are beginning Unit 4- Meeting the Characters. Students will continue to practice good habits for solving hard words (look closely at the word, stretch it out, looks for chunks you know, crash the parts together, try both vowel sounds, and do a triple check....Does it look right? Sound right? Make sense?). We will be focusing on story elements: characters, character traits, setting, problem/solution, and beginning/middle/end.
These are word solving strategies that we will be focusing on to improve our reading and our fluency: : "eagle eyes", "lips the fish", "stretchy snake", "flippy dolphin", "chunky monkey", "Skippy frog" and "Tryin' Lion.
In Writer's Workshop, we are beginning Unit 4: Scenes to Series. Students will create characters and write a realistic fiction chapter book. They will take their characters on adventures while they practice writing good beginnings, middles and ends with a problem and a solution.
We will continue to edit/revise to make our sentences easy to read/understand (1)begin with a capital (2)use finger spaces (3) form letters correctly (4) stretch out words to include all the sounds you hear(5) end with correct punctuation
Students will review/learn the "workshop" model to help foster good habits to help our reading and writing throughout the year.
Please check the "High-Frequency Word" page to see the spelling rules and sight words we will be learning. Spelling tests will be given but students will not receive a grade on their report card. Students will be learning rules for spelling and work on applying these rules to both learned and new words in their daily work. There will also be two spelling dictation sentences later in the trimester. This will allow me to assess the retention and application of old spelling rules and sight words. EX: The cat sits on a flat box.
***Book Bags" will go home every day. Please have your child read one book a night, mark it on the recording sheet and return the bag and all its books on Friday***
*Speed Reader sheets are part of daily homework (these will start later in the semester and an email will go home prior). They are to be handed in on Fridays. Only three days are required, but the more they practice these words, the better they will read. Students who complete all four days will receive extra stars on their earn and return cards.
